Syllabus

Heart – heart as a pump, systemic versus pulmonary circulation, heart nervous tissue (heart brain)
Vessels – arteries, veins, capillary beds, lymphatic vessels
Blood – red blood cells and their production, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, fluid compartments; intercellular (two thirds), interstitial fluid (quarter), within vessels (tenth)
Lungs -breathing, importance of the diaphragm, gas exchange across alveoli
Muscles associated with breathing
Control of heart and breathing – stress responses, hyperventilation
